Toll in Europe can be collected in different ways, depending on the country and the specific toll road or bridge. Here are some common methods of toll collection in Europe:
Which vehicles are subject to toll in Europe is depending on the country and the particular road or bridge. In general, however, almost all vehicles using tollroads or bridges in Europe are subject to tolls. This applies to cars, trucks, motorcycles, buses, and other types of vehicles.
In some countries, tolls are calculated based on the size and weight of the vehicle. On certain toll roads, for example, trucks are charged higher than cars. In addition, on some toll roads and bridges, different toll rates may apply to different types of vehicles, such as passenger cars versus commercial vehicles.
There are many toll roads, highways, and bridges all over Europe. The specific toll road regulations vary by country, region, and by type of vehicle.
You can check the local regulations and toll road information about each country on the main toll page.
Below you can find the overview:
*will be introduced in April 2023.
In Europe, there are several toll solutions that are commonly used for toll roads and bridges.
EETS stands for Electronic European Toll Service, which is a system that allows drivers to pay tolls electronically in multiple European countries using a single OBU (on-board unit). With the EETS system, drivers can reduce the number of OBUs when travelling across Europe and simplify the toll bureaucratic process.
More information about EETS could be found in Eurowag blog section:
The main benefit of using EETS OBU is to have only one device that can be used in multiple countries. So, you can easily travel across borders without having to worry about different toll systems and countries specifics. Also, having an EETS OBU allows you to easily add countries to this device over-the-air.
EW EETS OBU (EVA) – is the Eurowag’s in-house product. The name EVA stands for Enhanced Vehicle Assistant.
Benefits of EW EETS OBU (EVA)
Pre-pay mode: In a pre-pay mode, customer is firstly paying a deposit to the Eurowag account and then this money is used to cover the expenses.
Post-pay mode: In a post-pay mode, customers could use the toll service and then receive an invoice for payment. The post-pay mode and credit limit should be approved by the Eurowag Credit Department.
EW EETS OBU (EVA) covers 9 toll domains and is the first OBU that allows to pay tolls in the Czech Republic and Slovakia (coming in 2023).
Together with Axxes DSRC tag you can pay tolls in the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Storebaelt Bridge, A1 & A4 (Poland) motorways, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Øresund Bridge, Liefkenshoek Tunnel, and Herren Tunnel.
More information about EETS could be found in Eurowag blog section:
