Current Fuel Card Fraud Threats and Solutions Eurowag Provides

In today's world, cashless payments are not only convenient but essential. This makes fuel cards as vital as the trucks transporting our products worldwide. However, as we increasingly rely on these digital tools, the cleverness of those who aim to misuse them also increases. In this article, we’ll explore the complex issue of fuel card fraud, discuss its effects, and review the strong measures available to protect your business.

Current Fuel Card Fraud Threats and Solutions Eurowag Provides

What is Fuel Card Fraud?

Fuel card fraud includes various illegal actions where someone misuses or copies fuel cards to make unauthorised purchases without the owner's permission. These actions can involve copying or altering the card's details to obtain fuel illegally. Both are significant crimes but involve different approaches and protective measures. It's essential to secure fuel cards as they offer a convenient and expectedly safe way to pay for fuel in company vehicles.

The Financial Impact on Businesses

Transportation companies without robust security measures can face severe financial losses from fuel card fraud, with potential costs running into tens of thousands of euros. Although it's not a daily event, the threat is real and can disrupt business operations, slow growth, and, in extreme cases, threaten a company's stability. By implementing effective security protocols, businesses can significantly reduce the risk of fraud, protecting their fleet's budget from considerable losses, which could otherwise eat up to 30% of operational expenses.

Current Trends in Fuel Card Fraud

Fuel card theft is becoming more advanced as criminals develop new methods to exploit payment system weaknesses. This section highlights key trends in fuel card fraud, including technical tactics such as skimming and insider-assisted fraud. Recognising these patterns is crucial for creating solid defences to safeguard your business.

Skimming

Skimming is a common type of fuel card fraud. It happens when criminals use devices to record card details secretly during transactions. This allows them to gain unauthorised access to card information and conduct fraudulent activities without the cardholder's awareness.

Truck Break-ins

A concerning trend is the theft of fuel cards from trucks during stops, often accompanied by the physical removal of fuel from the tanks. This not only results in financial losses but also endangers drivers by exposing them to direct confrontations with criminals.

Card Swapping

Card swapping is a common method of fuel card fraud. In this type of fraud, a thief quietly switches a legitimate card with one that has been previously misused and blocked. Often, the replacement card is from an unsuspecting customer. Victims usually remain unaware of the fraud until they see unauthorised transactions or their card is declined.

Insider-Assisted Fraud

Unfortunately, insider-assisted fraud is another common method of fuel card theft in which drivers themselves are involved. At various locations, drivers might be offered money to let fraudsters copy their fuel cards, and often, they accept. This type of fraud is particularly concerning because it breaches trust within a company’s operational framework. It is vital to promote driver awareness and loyalty to prevent such fraud.

Deep Dive into the Dangers of Fuel Card Fraud

Are Truckers in Danger of Fuel Card Fraud?

Yes, truck drivers are at a high risk of fuel card fraud, particularly in regions like Western and Southern Europe, where there is frequent cross-border fleet activity. Although truck drivers are often the direct targets, the financial losses and operational disruptions impact the entire company. This risk stems from the difficulties in effectively managing and monitoring card usage across widespread and varied routes.

Can Fuel Card Fraud Significantly Impact My Business?

Absolutely, fuel card fraud can have a severe effect on your business. Small businesses are especially vulnerable, as the added expenses from fraud can be substantial. These extra costs can severely strain your finances, potentially leading to bankruptcy.

Which Countries Are Most Vulnerable to Fuel Card Fraud?

Countries such as France, Italy, Spain, and others in Western and Southern Europe are known hotspots for fuel card fraud due to their frequent occurrences. However, it's important to understand that fuel card fraud can happen anywhere within the network, not limited to these regions. Businesses using multiple fuel cards across different routes should stay vigilant regardless of where they operate.

How Eurowag Fights Back: Solutions to Shield Your Business

Secure PIN and Limits

All our cards are secured with PIN codes that only you know. You can also choose a security limit for each card to correspond with the type of vehicle that it’s used for. Secure PIN and Limits for all fuel payments ensure that every transaction using our fuel cards is protected against unauthorised access.

Card Lock

The Eurowag Card Lock feature provides an extra layer of security, allowing fleet managers to regulate fuel card usage. Managers have the sole authority to toggle the card lock feature on or off, and they can independently assign specific users the ability to unlock particular cards as needed. This straightforward feature ensures smooth card management while upholding security standards.

How Does the Card Lock System Work?

When a fuel card is secured with the Card Lock system, it benefits from enhanced card security. By default, it is automatically set to “locked” state.  The card must be  "unlocked" before being used for point-of-sale (POS) transactions, such as purchasing fuel or services. Even if the correct PIN code is entered, a transaction can only be completed if the card is unlocked.

There are several methods to unlock a fuel card:

  • The driver can unlock the card via SMS and the EW app.
  • An operator, like a dispatcher, can unlock the card via SMS and the EW app.
  • The card can be unlocked through the client's web portal.

Once unlocked, the card will remain active for 30 minutes before automatically reverting to its locked state. This feature ensures added security against unauthorised use while maintaining convenience for legitimate transactions.

What is Fuel Guard and How Does it Work?

Fuel Guard employs an advanced telematics system to boost security measures. It tracks the location of a vehicle fitted with a compatible onboard unit (OBU) each time a fuel card linked to that vehicle is utilised at a fuel station. If the fuel card is identified outside the pre-established "safe perimeter," the authorisation request is promptly denied.
